About Karamunting Fruit Melastoma malabathricum

Karamunting Fruit Melastoma malabathricum have scietific name Melastoma malabathricum, and synonym Rhodomyrtus tomentosa or Ochthocharis bornensis Bl. Karamunting Fruit comes from India, East to South China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Southern Malaysia, and Sulawesi. Plants of woody shrub with a height of 4 m. Karamunting is tolerant of full sun and puddles. Can growing in places with a height of 300 m, rarely found in areas with an altitude of 1300 m above sea level. The location of the cross-facing leaves and the three leaf bones of the base, oval, pointed and tapered base, flat edges, shiny upper surface, while the bottom surface is rough because it has fine hairs, 5-7 cm long and 2-3 cm. Pink purple flower, a compound type with attached petals, number of flowers crowns five and one pistil.

The young green fruit with the top is decorated by a sheath resembling a petal with matching the color and will fruit, has four to six spaces. Toward the mature, the color of the original fruit becomes brownish red to black and can in consumption. The sized of ripe fruit is ¾ grapes. It skin was velvety, not shiny unless it was only raining. The fruit has seeds like grape seeds, the meat feels more fibrous, not much water, and it tastes sweet. Karamunting fruits contain lots of antioxidants and show a hemostatic effect in the upper gastrointestinal tract and against metrorrhagia causes bleeding in women.

Fruit can also raise the level of hemoglobin and red blood cell count, antianoxic, cold feeling, and is able to fight the fatigue of the organism. Karamunting fruits and root extracts inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. Karamunting roots can also increase platelets, fibrinogen, and smooth vascular contracting muscles.
